What it’s like

Hop on and off an open-top bus round 21 stops, with your ticket good for a full day or two.

You buy a ticket, find a stop, and hop on an open-top bus that loops past 21 stops covering 2000 years of the city's history, from Fishergate Bar to Rowntrees Park. The loop itself takes about an hour, but the whole point is that you can get off wherever looks interesting, poke around, and catch the next bus along, since buses run as often as every 15 minutes between 9am and 5.30pm.

A 24-hour adult ticket is £10 online, and a family ticket covers the lot for £20, which is a reasonable way to see the city if you'd rather sit down than walk it. Commentary comes in seven languages, so it works if you've got relatives visiting who don't speak much English. Buy in September or October and you get 20% off online, and in September kids go free with an adult, which is worth timing a visit around if you can.

There's no need to commit to one day either. Tickets stay valid for 12 months if they haven't been scanned yet, and if it rains on the day you're booked, the rainy day guarantee lets you use the ticket again within the following week instead. All the buses take wheelchairs on the lower deck with a ramp, and assistance animals travel too.

Buying online rather than on the day is the move if you want that discount, since standard prices without it cost more.
