What it’s like

A sports and swim centre with a 50m pool, toddler soft play for 50p a session, and holiday camps that run 9am to 4pm.

This one's built around the 50m Olympic pool, which is where Aquarius Swim School runs its lessons and where there's an accessible pool pod and lift if you need it. Term-time also brings parent and toddler soft play, football coaching and cycling sessions with British Cycling, all priced low enough that you won't wince: toddler soft play is 50p a child, football's £3.50, cycling's £2.

School holidays switch things up with day camps for 5 to 11 year olds, running 9am to 4pm. A single day is £20, or £90 for the full week, and you can add wraparound care from 8am for £3.50 a session if the school-run maths doesn't work otherwise. One thing to flag: bookings are final once made, no refunds, so it's worth being sure of your dates before you commit. Kids also need to arrive by 10:30am or they risk being turned away, and it's a nut-free site so check what's going in the lunchbox.

The café's open 8am to 7pm for hot and cold food, and parking's free on site with disabled bays included. It's an easy one to get to without a car too, with buses from the city centre dropping you a short walk away.

Opening hours are generous on weekdays, 6:30am to 10pm, which suits an early swim before work as much as an after-school session. Weekends are shorter, 8:30am to 6pm, same on bank holidays.
