What it’s like

Walking trails and wildlife watching around a mill lake, with a play area and free parking for when little legs give out.

This is a walk-and-look sort of day rather than a splash-about one. The trails run low-level grass or boardwalk around the lake, so a buggy copes with most of it, and there's a play area open year-round for when the wildlife watching wears thin. School holidays bring on organised children's activities too, which is worth timing a visit around if your kids need more than ducks to keep them interested.

Entry is £5 a child and £7 an adult, or £18 for a family ticket covering two adults and two children (or one adult and three). That's not pocket change for an afternoon by a lake, though parking's free, which softens it a bit. Hours run 10 to 5 most of the year, dropping to 4pm on Sundays and through the winter months.

The site is upfront that low water can expose muddy reservoir bed and inlets, and they don't want anyone wandering onto those edges, sensible with kids in tow near open water. Wheelchair access holds up on the main boardwalk sections but some parts of the site need an extra pair of hands if you're accompanying a wheelchair user.

It's open seven days a week, 364 days a year, closed only on Christmas Day, with shorter hours on Christmas Eve and around New Year. If you're the sort who visits often, the £65 annual family membership might work out cheaper than a few separate trips.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£5 for a child, £7 for an adult, or £18 for a family ticket covering two adults and two children.

Do we need to book?

There's nothing on booking here, so it reads as turn-up-and-pay entry.

What are the opening hours?

10am to 5pm from March to October, though Sundays close at 4pm. From November to February it's 10am to 4pm daily.

Is it open all year?

Yes, seven days a week, 364 days a year. The only full closure is Christmas Day, with shorter hours on Christmas Eve and over New Year.

Is there parking?

Free parking on site.

Is it buggy and wheelchair friendly?

Most of the nature trail is low-level grass or boardwalk, so buggies generally manage fine. Some areas aren't suitable for wheelchair users unless accompanied.

What is there for kids to do?

Walking trails, wildlife watching and a play area that's open year-round, plus organised children's activities during school holidays.

Is it safe for kids near the water?

The site warns that low water levels can expose muddy reservoir bed, inlets and water edges, and asks visitors to keep off those areas, so it pays to keep a close eye near the lake.
