What it’s like

Fishing tuition and guided lakeside trails for kids aged 5 to 16, with under-16s fishing at half price.

Fishing is the main event here. Kids can work through Bronze, Silver and Gold Get Fishing Awards over three-hour tuition sessions, which is a decent chunk of time for a beginner to actually catch something rather than just sit there. Under-16s fish at half price, but they need an adult with them the whole time, so this isn't a drop-and-go activity.

If nobody in your group fancies a rod, there are three guided nature trails around the lakes instead, with tickets from the catering vehicle in the main car park. It's a nice way to let the fishing crowd get on with it while everyone else has a wander. Just note you're asked to park at the top and walk round so you don't disturb anyone mid-cast, which is fair enough but worth knowing before you head straight for the water.

Day fishing runs 7am to 7pm and the gates lock on the dot, so a lazy start isn't really on the cards if you want a full day. The Lakeside Café by the entrance covers food and drink, and the tackle shop next door means you're not stuck if you've forgotten a landing net or bait. Showers are available for £2 with the key from the bailiff, handy if you've booked a longer session and want to freshen up before the drive home.

This suits families with a keen young angler more than a toddler day out, given the minimum age of 5 and the focus on tuition. Non-fishing guests tagging along with someone who is fishing pay £3 each, which is worth factoring in if it's a mixed group.
