WHERE

Hayling Island

What it’s like

A farm shop on Hayling Island where, come late July, you can head out into Sam's Sunflower Fields and pick your own blooms.

This is a farm shop first, so most of the year it's a stop for fruit and veg rather than a destination day out. But from late July it earns its place on a list of things to do with kids, because Sam's Sunflower Fields opens up and you can wander out to cut your own sunflowers and wildflowers to take home.

Worth knowing before you plan around it: the fields are shut for 2026 and aren't due to open again until late July 2026, so if you're reading this earlier in the year the picking itself isn't on offer yet. The shop keeps running as normal in the meantime.

It suits a family who fancy a slow, outdoorsy hour rather than anything with rides or play equipment. Younger children who like flowers and running between rows will get more out of it than teenagers, and it's not the kind of visit that fills a whole day. Parking's free and right by the shop, and it's step-free and wheelchair accessible throughout, so a buggy or wheelchair isn't an issue. Dogs aren't allowed at the farm shop, so leave them at home for this one.

Hours are generous for a farm shop: open every day, 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and a bit later start on Sundays at 9.30am to 4pm. Christmas week has its own shortened hours, with a couple of days closed over the 25th, 26th and 1st January.
