Hayling Island

What it’s like

A 144-seat community theatre on Hayling Island putting on family pantomime, a Christmas show with Santa, films and live music.

This is a proper local theatre rather than a big touring venue, and that's part of the appeal. The main draw for families is the pantomime, Mother Goose in this run, plus a separate Christmas show that throws in carol singing and a visit from Santa alongside the usual characters. Tickets for the panto are £16 for adults and £12 for under-16s, dropping to £14 and £10 if you're a HIADS member, so it's worth joining up if you know you'll be back.

Beyond the seasonal shows there's a decent scattering of other things going on: blockbuster film screenings from £4.50 for the front three rows, workshops and training sessions for anyone keen on getting on stage themselves, and grown-up gigs like the Generation Rock live band night. Ages 3 to 93 are listed, which tells you this isn't just a kids' venue, it's a proper community hub that happens to do excellent pantomime.

The auditorium itself seats 144 with raked seating, so nobody's craning round a tall stranger's head, and there's a hearing loop and air conditioning too. Parking's free on site with a disabled bay right by the entrance, and there are eight removable front row seats for wheelchair users plus a disabled toilet off the foyer, so access has clearly been thought through properly rather than bolted on.

Booking is all done through their online system or by phone, and you can also turn up to the box office on Saturday mornings between 10 and noon, or an hour before a show if you'd rather book in person. Just don't try emailing them for tickets, that one's a no.
