What it’s like

Free Bookbug sessions of songs and rhymes for babies and toddlers, no booking needed, just turn up.

The main reason to bring a little one here is Bookbug, the free drop-in session for babies, toddlers and under-fives with songs, stories and rhymes. It runs for 30 to 45 minutes and there's no booking, you just turn up on the day. For a two-year-old who won't sit still for a full story time, that length feels about right.

Opening hours stretch late on Tuesdays and Thursdays, till 8pm, which is handy if you're working during the day and want an evening session or just a browse of the shelves. Saturdays are shorter, 9 till 4, and Sunday it's shut, so don't plan a weekend trip around a Sunday visit. There's a baby change on site, which matters more than most things when you've got a pram and a toddler mid-meltdown.

Getting there by car is the one bit of friction. There's no car park on site, so you're relying on the public car park on Kay Street and a short walk in. Once you're through the door it's free entry and wheelchair accessible, though it's worth knowing there's no accessible toilet in the building itself.

It won't fill an afternoon on its own, more a stop of an hour or so around the Bookbug slot, but for a rainy morning with a baby who needs a change of scene, it does the job without costing you anything.
