What it’s like
Pick a piece of pottery off the shelf, paint it over a two-hour table session, then wait a week or so for it to come back glazed and fired.
You choose your pottery first, a small mug, a plate, a plant pot, whatever catches your eye, and that price covers the item, the table time, unlimited underglaze and the kiln firing at the end. There's no extra painting fee to worry about once you've picked your piece, which makes the whole thing easier to budget for than it sounds. A small child's mug or side plate starts at £20, adult mugs run about £25, and a big dinner plate is £40, so it's worth knowing which end of that scale you're aiming for before you sit down.
You get two hours at the table, which the studio reckons is plenty, and you can pay £5 a head to stay on if you're mid-masterpiece and not ready to stop. Hand and paw prints on pottery are on the list of things to do too. Once you're done, the piece takes 7 to 10 days to be glazed and fired, and you've got up to two months to collect it before it heads off to a charity shop, so don't let it slip your mind.
It's open most days from 9:30 to 5, with a later finish of 8pm on Fridays and a closed Wednesday in term time (though it reopens on Wednesdays through the school holidays). There's a café on site doing hot and cold drinks and snacks with vegan and gluten-free options, and dogs are not just tolerated but get a free treat or a puppuccino, which is a nice touch if you're bringing the family pet along for a paw print session.
Parking is the one snag: it's limited and free at the rear, with the nearest free car park on Pool Road about five minutes' walk if the on-site spaces are full. Birthday parties get their own spaces, The Loft for ages 7 and up and The Cabin kept adults-only for hen dos or baby showers, both with pottery included in the price. If you fancy a grown-up night out, the first Friday of the month brings Paint & Prosecco, £10 a ticket for a glass of fizz and nibbles, with the pottery itself charged separately on top.
