What it’s like
Free gallery of Spode pottery history with hands-on digital models and a café tucked in a walled garden.
You wander through the old factory galleries looking at the pottery and demonstrations, then there's a Digital Museum bit where interactive models and site walkthroughs let you poke about on screen rather than just read a label. It's a quieter kind of visit than a hands-on children's museum, but the digital models give curious kids something to actually do rather than just look.
Entry's free, which makes it an easy call if you've got an hour spare in Stoke-on-Trent, though the site is only open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 till 4, so a Monday whim won't work. There's a lift to the first floor if you're pushing a buggy or need step-free access, and a café on site doing homemade cakes, with 30 seats indoors and another 32 out in what they call the Secret Garden, which sounds like the better spot on a dry day.
Parking is on site but only free for the first two hours, so if you're planning a longer look round the galleries and a slow cake afterwards, you might want to check how the timing stacks up before you settle in. The train station is about five minutes' walk if you'd rather leave the car altogether.
