What it’s like
Ballroom and Latin classes for absolute beginners upwards, from a 45-minute Saturday session for 3 to 8 year olds to adult classes and competition training.
This is Ballroom and Latin from the ground up. The under-8s get a 45-minute Saturday slot to learn steps and basic footwork without anyone worrying about looking silly, and there's a follow-on class for 8 and up once they've got the bug. Nobody needs a partner for beginners either, which takes the pressure off if your child's mate drops out halfway through term.
For £4 a class at the younger end, it's one of the cheaper regular activities you'll find, and the competitive stream (also £4, or £5 on a Saturday) is where it gets serious. Kids who want to compete need a UKA medal test done at the school first, and the site is upfront that private lessons are the sensible route if you're aiming for an actual competition rather than just the class. There are four grades at most comps, from Intro up to Bars & Stars, and your child's teacher decides which one they dance.
Adults aren't left out. Beginners run Tuesday and Thursday evenings, moving up to Intermediate on a Monday and Advanced later in the week, so there's a proper path if you fancy learning alongside your kids rather than just watching from the side.
Parking is straightforward: free for three hours at the Sainsbury's three minutes away, or pay and display at Market Car Park South Wolfe Street if that's full. Competition days mean packing more than a leotard, dress or shirt, both colours of socks, shoes, safety pins, hairspray and snacks, so give yourself a bit of time to get organised before the first one.
