What it’s like
Old buses and cars you can get right up close to, plus free rides on the historic fleet, one Sunday a month.
This one's a proper collection of vintage buses and cars rather than a hands-on science centre, and the big draw is that you're not stuck behind a rope. Kids can get close to the vehicles and hear the stories behind them, which beats a laminated info card any day. The bonus is free short trips on selected historic buses, so a five-year-old obsessed with anything on wheels gets an actual ride, not just a look.
The catch is timing. This only opens on the second Sunday of every month, 10:30am to 4pm with last entry at 3pm, so it's not somewhere you can just decide to pop into on a rainy Tuesday. Get that date in the diary or you'll be waiting weeks for the next go.
Adults are £10, but accompanied under-16s go in free, which softens the blow if you've got a couple of kids in tow. There's a café on site and a gift shop for the inevitable end-of-visit negotiation, and the car park is free with marked disabled spaces close to the entrance. If you fancy leaving the car at home, there's a free heritage shuttle bus running from Rotherham Interchange on open days, or you can walk from Rotherham Central station.
It's an outdoor site, so factor that into what you pack. Card only for payments too, so don't turn up expecting to pay in cash.
