What it’s like

Free city-centre gallery near the station, open every day but Monday, with a café for the inevitable snack break.

There's no admission charge here, which makes it an easy one to slot into a rainy afternoon without committing to a full day out. They do ask for donations on the way in, cash or contactless boxes at the door, and it's a fair shout if you've got the change.

It's a proper gallery rather than a hands-on children's museum, so it suits kids who can cope with looking rather than climbing. Step-free access throughout and an accessible toilet mean a buggy won't be a problem, and wheelchairs are available to borrow if you ring ahead, though you do need to book that in advance rather than turn up and ask.

The café, Ambulo, does coffee and grilled cheese sandwiches, but food and drink aren't allowed in the galleries themselves, so factor that in if you've got a toddler who eats constantly. It's shut on Mondays, and Sunday hours are shorter than the rest of the week, 11 till 4 rather than the 10 till 5 you get Tuesday to Saturday.

Parking is the one that'll annoy you. There's no free car park attached, just paid options nearby, though there is a discount code for Q Park if you book ahead. If you're coming by train it's only a five to ten minute walk from Sheffield station, which is probably the easier option if you can manage it.
