What it’s like

A weekly vocal group for confident adult singers, rehearsing with a professional coach and performing with a live band each term.

This is an adults' vocal group, not a kids' choir, so leave the children at home for this one. You rehearse once a week on Thursday evenings, 7:30 to 9:30, working with a professional vocal coach on technique and repertoire, and at least once a term you get up and perform with a live professional band, building to a bigger concert at the end of term three.

There's no audition, but they do say you need a confident singing voice and the ability to hold your own part in a group, so this isn't a beginners' singing-for-fun setup. You won't be put on the spot to sing solo unless you want to, and you don't need to read music, sheet music is there if you want it, but they say they tackle the repertoire in different ways so it stays accessible either way.

The catch is the commitment. It's not a drop-in session, you're signing up for a full year at £130 a term, and members are expected to practice their parts outside of rehearsal too. Places are strictly limited to keep the voice parts balanced, which is fair enough for the sound but does mean you can't just turn up on a whim.

If you're curious rather than certain, the books open every August and new members get a free taster session at the start of the new season in September with no obligation, which is the sensible way to find out if it's for you before committing to the full year.
