What it’s like

A working estate with a walled garden, farm animals, an adventure playground and a house full of family history to tour.

The adventure playground and farm are free to get into and open early, so that's the bit you can turn up for without worrying about tickets. Kids can meet the farm animals, including the Royal Golden Guernsey goats, before wandering into the 18th century Walled Garden or doing the circular walk through the parkland. It's the sort of place where a morning slips by without anyone noticing.

The house itself is a different visit, and a more expensive one. Guided tours run about an hour, at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and bank holidays, and tickets are limited for each one, so booking ahead is genuinely worth doing rather than just a suggestion. At £24.50 for an adult on top of parkland entry it's not a casual add-on, but the family history and anecdotes the guides tell are apparently what people come back for. Worth knowing the house closes for tours from late September to late March, so this half is a spring and summer plan.

Pushchairs get left in Stone Hall for the house tour, and if you've got an infant a sling works better than trying to steer a buggy through it. The Coach House Café does breakfast and lunch with last food orders at 3pm, or there's the Farm Shop and coffee shop open daily if the café's shut. Parking is free, with accessible spaces nearer the Farm Shop entrance, and two manual wheelchairs can be borrowed if you call ahead, though the house's first floor and chapel aren't reachable by wheelchair.

Parkland and gardens close for an autumn break from late September to late October, and prices actually drop a bit for the October half term dates and the Farmers Market day, so if the house tour isn't the priority those might be the cheaper weeks to go.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Parkland and gardens is £16 for an adult and £8 for a child up to late September, dropping to £12.50 and £7 during October half term. A house guided tour is extra, £24.50 for an adult and £10 for a child.

Do we need to book?

Booking for parkland and gardens isn't essential but is recommended in busy periods. House guided tours have limited tickets, so book those in advance.

Do we need a ticket for the playground and farm?

No. The adventure playground, farm, café and farm shop are free to visit without a parkland ticket.

When are the house tours?

Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, plus bank holiday Mondays, from mid-March to late September, at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm. Each tour lasts about an hour.

Is the house open all year?

Guided tours stop from late September and the house reopens in late March. Parkland and gardens also close for an autumn break from late September to late October.

What's there to eat?

The Coach House Café serves breakfast and lunch, with last food orders at 3pm and takeaway only until 4pm. The Farm Shop and coffee shop are open daily as well.

Is there parking?

Free parking in the main car park, with accessible spaces closer to the Farm Shop entrance.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

The ground floor of the house is accessible, though the first floor and chapel are not. Two manual wheelchairs can be borrowed on site if you book ahead by phone.

Can we bring a pushchair into the house?

Pushchairs are left in Stone Hall for the tour, so a baby sling or harness works better if you're carrying a little one round the house.

Are dogs allowed?

Assistance dogs are welcome in all public areas, and there are water bowls at the café.

How long should we plan for?

Parkland and gardens is an all-day ticket, so you can wander at your own pace between the garden, farm and playground. A house tour on top adds about an hour.

Is there a Farmers Market day?

There's one on 3rd October with slightly reduced parkland and gardens pricing for that day.
