What it’s like

Walled gardens, woodland walks and a proper old hall to look round on open days, out between Seaton and Hornsea.

The walk here is the thing to save time for: an interactive woodland trail with little doors and animals tucked along the way, plus the walled gardens to wander through. It is not a hands-on activity centre, so this suits an older child who will actually stop and look for the details rather than one who needs something to climb on.

Two ticket types make it a bit more complicated than it needs to be. A Garden Ticket gets you the grounds, gardens and walks, and on Open Days you can upgrade to the Inclusive Ticket to see the Hall itself. Garden Days run Monday to Friday from 10:30am to 4:00pm, last tickets at 3:30pm, but the Hall is only open on specific Open Days, which run from 1:30pm to 4:00pm. If you want the full day, an All Day Ticket on an open day lets you in from 10:30am, bird hide included, and you're allowed to bring a picnic and make a day of it by Hornsea Mere.

Food is limited to ticket holders: proper tea rooms with homemade cakes on Open Days, self-service refreshments on Garden Days. There's no need to book ahead, you just pay on the day by cash or card, which takes the pressure off. Parking's free and plentiful, with disabled parking close to the Walled Garden, and dogs are welcome as long as they're on leads.

Prices are modest rather than cheap for what you get: £3.50 for a child on the Inclusive Ticket, £2 on the Garden Ticket, with under-11s going free throughout. Groups of ten or more adults can arrange a guided tour of the Hall plus tea in the walled gardens for £17 a head, which is worth knowing if you're planning something bigger than a family trip.

Plan your visit

What are the opening times?

Garden Days run Monday to Friday, 10:30am to 4:00pm, with last tickets at 3:30pm. Open Days, when the Hall itself is accessible, run 1:30pm to 4:00pm.

Do we need to book?

No pre-booking, you just turn up and pay by cash or card on the day.

How much does it cost?

A Garden Ticket is £7 for an adult and £2 for a child aged 11 to 15. The Inclusive Ticket, which adds the Hall, is £10 for an adult and £3.50 for a child.

Are children free?

Children ten and under go free on every ticket type. Ages 11 to 15 get the discounted child rate.

Can we see inside the Hall?

Only on Open Days, when the Inclusive Ticket or All Day Ticket covers it. On regular Garden Days it's the walled gardens and walks only.

What's there for kids to do?

There's an interactive woodland walk with little doors and animals to spot, plus the walled gardens to explore. It suits an older child better than a toddler.

Is there food on site?

Tea rooms serve hot drinks and homemade cakes on Open Days, and there's self-service refreshments on Garden Days, but both are for ticket holders only.

Can we bring a picnic?

If you've got an All Day Ticket, and there's a picnic area in the car park by Hornsea Mere.

Is there parking?

Parking's free and there's plenty of it, with disabled parking close to the Walled Garden.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes, on leads.

Can we visit as a group?

Groups of ten or more adults can book a guided tour of the Hall with tea in the walled gardens for £17 a person, arranged in advance.

How do we get there without a car?

Bus 246 runs between Hull, Beverley and Hornsea and stops nearby, or you can get a train to Hull or Beverley and then a taxi or bus.
