WHERE

Hull

What it’s like

Free access to local archives, maps and family history courses for anyone tracing their Hull roots.

This is one for the family tree hunters rather than the under-tens. You can drop in and dig through archives, books, historical documents and maps, or sign up for a family history course pitched at beginners or intermediate level, run on Monday mornings in term time. There's also a Monday afternoon helpdesk if you just want pointed help rather than a full course.

If you fancy a bit more structure, the monthly local history talks happen on the last Wednesday of the month at 10.30am, though they skip August and December. Those cost £3 a head, cash or card, which feels fair for what's otherwise a free place to get stuck into research.

Getting in is straightforward: Tuesday and Friday mornings are open house, 9.30am to 2.30pm, no booking needed as far as they say. Exhibitions run at weekends, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3pm, and those are worth timing a visit around if you want more than shelves of documents to look at. It's not a long visit unless you're properly absorbed in the archives, but for anyone piecing together family history in Hull it's a genuinely useful stop, and free entry takes the pressure off if you only pop in for twenty minutes.

Plan your visit

When are the exhibitions on?

Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 3pm. They're held at least twice a year.
