What it’s like
A free chalk-quarrying mill to explore, with listening stations, a heritage trail and a play area on the foreshore.
There's an old mill tower to poke round here, and inside it you'll find audio listening stations playing back memories and stories from Little Switzerland, the local nickname for this bit of the Country Park. It's a nice way to get kids actually listening rather than just walking past a plaque, and you'll pick up how the whiting mill worked and how whiting itself was made along the way.
Outside, the Chalk Walk heritage trail threads through the Country Park, so you can turn a quick look at the mill into a proper nature walk if the weather's playing along. There's a play area down near the mill on the foreshore too, which is the bit that'll actually get remembered on the drive home, whatever the history lesson was meant to achieve.
One thing to flag: the upper floors of the mill are stairs only, so if you've got a buggy or anyone who struggles with steps, you'll be sticking to ground level. The paths around the mill and car park have had accessibility work done, which helps if you're coming with a pushchair generally.
It's free to get in and there's free parking at the top of the Country Park and round the back of the mill, though there's also a Pay and Display option by The Country Park Inn if the free spaces are full. You can walk from Hessle railway station in about 15 minutes, or the 350 bus runs Mondays to Saturdays roughly every half hour if you're coming without a car.
