What it’s like

A historic artillery fort you explore through tunnels and battery rooms, open only for its event days rather than daily visits.

This isn't a fort you can just turn up to any old Tuesday. Fort Paull runs as an events venue these days, so what's on depends on the date you pick, whether that's a car show, a summer market or a festive evening with Santa. On the days it is open, the draw is the tunnels through the old artillery battery and the living history re-enactments, which the site says span everything from the Civil War to the 1940s. That's a proper spread of history for one afternoon, and it's the sort of detail that sticks with a ten-year-old long after the day out.

There are bouncy castles too, included in your entry price, which takes the edge off for anyone under about eight who's less fussed about artillery emplacements than about bouncing. Given the setup, this leans toward school-age kids who can handle a fair bit of walking and some patchy queuing at the re-enactment slots, rather than toddlers who'll want a nap by lunchtime.

Prices swing about depending on the event. An open day can be as little as £2 for adults, while the car shows run £5 for adults and £3.50 for children, and the festive evening in December is £5 a child, or £7.50 if you want the Santa experience thrown in. None of it will break the bank, but it does mean checking which date you're booking against rather than assuming one price fits all.

Because the fort only opens for these set events, spontaneity isn't really on the table here. Pick your date, pick your event, and plan the day around whatever's running, whether that's a summer market in August or a Christmas market later in the year.
