What it’s like

A 70-minute walk-through with a 4D flying bus ride, DreamWorks characters and nine live shows along the way.

This is a walk-through, not a ride-based day out, and the site is upfront that you'll be on your feet for most of it. You go through a 70-minute interactive experience with a 4D flying bus at the centre of it, water sprays, air blasts and fog included, so it's not one for anyone prone to motion sickness or a bad chest. Along the way you meet Shrek, Fiona and the rest of the DreamWorks cast, with nine fairytale-themed live shows worked into the route and an interactive area for Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon fans.

It suits the 6 to 15 bracket best. Under-twos go free, but there's no getting round the standing and walking, and the witch characters are flagged as a genuine scare risk for younger or more sensitive kids. No photos during the main tour either, which stings a bit if you were hoping for the money shot with Shrek, though you can pick up something in the gift shop on the way out.

Prices jump hard if you leave it to the day: an adult booked online starts at £21, but pay on the door and it's £32. Kids follow the same pattern, £16 online against £26 on the day, so booking ahead is the obvious move rather than a nice-to-have. Timed entry slots apply at peak times and if you miss yours there's no guarantee they'll let you in, though you can reschedule free up to an hour before you're due.

Budget more time than the hour itself. Queuing typically runs 10 to 30 minutes and can stretch to an hour when it's busy, and buggies aren't allowed on the tour so you'll want the free storage bay. Wheelchair users get a dedicated timeslot once an hour, on the quarter hour, and carers can get in free with the right documentation.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

From £16 for a child and £21 for an adult if you book online. Turn up on the day and it jumps to £26 and £32.

Do we need to book ahead?

Booking isn't compulsory but it's the only way to get the lower price, and timed slots are required when it's busy. Miss your slot and they can't promise you'll get in.

How long does it take?

The tour itself runs about an hour, but queuing can add 10 to 30 minutes, sometimes up to 60 when it's packed.

What age is it suitable for?

It's aimed at 6 to 15 year olds. Under-twos go free, but the witch characters can genuinely scare younger kids.

Can I take photos during the tour?

No, photography isn't allowed during the main tour.

Is it accessible for wheelchair users?

The whole attraction is wheelchair accessible and there's a dedicated timeslot once an hour, on the quarter hour. Carers can get free tickets with documentation.

Can I bring a buggy?

Buggies aren't permitted on the tour itself, but there's free storage for one at the buggy bay along with a bag.

Is the 4D bus ride intense?

It involves water sprays, air blasts, fog and aromas, so it's flagged as unsuitable for anyone with epilepsy, motion sickness, asthma or chronic illness.

Is there an audio guide for other languages?

Tours run in English only and there's no audio guide option.

What can we bring in with us?

Backpacks up to 30 litres are fine but large luggage and suitcases aren't allowed inside.
