What it’s like

Big projected shows on 11-metre walls that you wander round rather than sit and watch, near King's Cross.

This is not a sit-in-a-seat cinema thing. The show gets projected floor to ceiling on 11-metre walls and you move round the space, including a lower viewing gallery, so little ones who can't sit still for an hour actually get a job to do: wander about and look up. A loop runs around 50 to 64 minutes, and there's no allocated seating, which suits younger kids fine but might grate if you were hoping to plonk down and rest your feet the whole time.

They say it's open to everyone from birth, though the site does ask parents to keep younger children supervised and to think about the other guests in the room, so it's not really a place to bring a toddler mid-meltdown. Under 3s go free in selected slots, which is a nice touch given adult tickets are £25. Students and under 18s get £15, and if you're going with a school or a group of 10 or more the rate drops right down to £10 a head.

It's cashless only, card or contactless everywhere, so leave the coin jar at home. Booking is required with half-hourly timed slots, and last entry varies by day, from 4:30pm on the Monday opening to 7:30pm Thursday to Saturday. There's a café on site, and Coal Drops Yard next door has proper food if a snack won't cut it, from tapas to pizza. It's about a 10 minute walk from King's Cross station if you're coming by train.

One thing worth flagging: tickets bought anywhere other than Lightroom's own site, phone line or ticket office aren't valid, and can void your whole booking, so don't get tempted by a cheaper-looking listing elsewhere.

Plan your visit

How much are tickets?

£25 for an adult, £15 for students and under 18s, and under 3s go free in selected slots. Groups of 10 or more, including school groups, pay £10 each.

Do we need to book?

Booking's required, with half-hourly timed slots. You can book online, by phone (there's a £3 fee that way) or in person at the ticket office for free.

How long does a visit take?

One loop of the show runs about 50 to 64 minutes. Turn up on time for your slot since it's continuous.

Is it suitable for a toddler or baby?

It's open to all ages and under 3s go free in selected slots. You'll need to keep an eye on younger ones and be mindful of other visitors in the space.

Is there allocated seating?

No, tickets are general entry without a seat. You're meant to move around the main space and lower gallery, though you can email ahead if you need a seat.

What's the last entry time?

It's 4:30pm on Monday, 7:30pm Thursday to Saturday, and 5:30pm on Sunday. Lightroom is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Can we pay by cash?

It's card only throughout the venue.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

Level entry with lift access to every floor, though the lift is staff-operated. Wheelchair spaces per slot are limited so you may need to pick a different time, and access ticket holders get a free companion ticket.

What about food?

There's a café and bar on site, and Coal Drops Yard next door has plenty of options including tapas, pizza and Indian food.

Can we bring our dog?

Service animals are welcome in the show space, but emotional support animals aren't allowed in.

Where do I buy tickets?

Only through Lightroom's own website, their phone line, or the ticket office in person. Tickets from other sellers aren't valid and can void your whole booking.
