What it’s like

Free instrumental lessons and music group taster sessions for kids aged 4 to 13, from recorder club to samba drumming.

This is a place to try an instrument before you commit to buying one, or find out if your seven-year-old actually wants to stick with the violin past week three. The lessons are bespoke and one to one with expert teachers, and the list of instruments on offer is long: guitar, cello, clarinet, cornet, electric guitar, euphonium, flute, French horn, piano, recorder, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, tuba, violin. That's a proper spread for a free offer, and it's worth taking seriously if your child has been going on about learning drums for months.

For younger kids there's Mini Music Makers, aimed at 4 to 7 year olds, built around games, songs and percussion rather than sitting still and reading notation. Mini Voices Choir picks up for Years 1 and 2 if singing is more their thing. Samba Music runs right across the age range, Years 3 to 13, with different types of drums, and it's the one that'll get talked about at the dinner table. Beginner Recorder Club covers Years 2 to 6 and takes in Tudor music alongside jazz, pop and rock, which is a more interesting angle than the recorder usually gets.

Everything here is free, both the taster sessions and the bespoke lessons, which is unusual for this kind of thing and worth acting on before the taster slots fill up. There's no booking required, so it's a case of getting in touch during office hours. Those are a bit fiddly to work around: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 10am to 4pm, Friday just 10am to 12pm. Instrument drop-offs run longer, 8am to 4pm on those same days, if you need to hand something back or collect a loan instrument.
