What it’s like

A contemporary art gallery with drop-in workshops, a café, and a family silent disco with headphones and bubbles.

This is a proper gallery, not a soft play, so what you're getting is exhibitions and contemporary art displays alongside drop-in creative workshops. The standout for kids, though, is the Family Silent Disco: headphones, four themed playlists, giant beanbags, coloured lighting, scarves, bubbles and percussion instruments. That's the bit worth saving for last if you're doing a wander round the exhibitions first.

If your child finds galleries a bit much on the ears or eyes, there's a Relaxed Viewing Hour every Thursday 11 to 12, with brighter lighting and quieter sound. Tuesdays 11 to 12 is a Masked Visiting Hour for immunocompromised visitors. Outside those, they reckon 4 to 5pm is generally the quietest stretch of the day.

Kollective Kitchen, the café on site, opens earlier than the gallery itself, from 9am, so you could grab breakfast before the exhibitions open at 11. The gallery runs 11 to 5 Tuesday to Saturday and 11 to 4 on Sundays, and it's a lift job to get up to the office spaces and Studio II if you're pushing a buggy or using a wheelchair.

It's a three minute walk from Sheffield train station, and there's street parking on Brown Street at around £1.50 an hour if you're driving, plus four free disabled bays outside Showroom Workstation. There's no booking link listed.
