What it’s like

A small local history museum in Uppermill with hands-on learning areas for kids and galleries telling the story of Saddleworth.

This is a proper local history museum rather than a big interactive attraction, but there are learning areas built into the galleries specifically for children, so it's not just glass cases and labels. The collection covers Saddleworth's own history, which gives you something to actually talk through with an older child rather than just wander past.

Admission is refreshingly cheap: £3 for an adult, £2 concession, or £6 for a family ticket, which barely dents your day out budget. The catch is the opening hours, just 1pm to 4pm daily, so this is very much an afternoon add-on to something else rather than a morning-to-lunch plan. Three hours a day doesn't leave much room for turning up late.

Parking is free in Uppermill, though the on-site council car park is limited to three hours, which is fine given the museum's own hours but worth bearing in mind if you're combining it with lunch in the village. If that fills up, Saddleworth Pool and Leisure Centre car park is a five to ten minute walk away. The building is wheelchair friendly and there's a gift shop and toilets on site, and it's closed over Christmas and New Year.
