What it’s like
Six waymarked trails through wood pasture and riverside woodland along the Churnet, free to walk and open for a proper muddy ramble.
This is walking country rather than a playground, and that's the appeal. Six waymarked trails plus the canal tow path wind through wood pasture, pools and mature woodland alongside the River Churnet, so you can pick a route to match the mood of the day, whether that's a short pushchair-friendly stretch or something longer for kids who actually want to walk.
Worth knowing before you set off: the red route and the tow path are the flattest options. Most of the other trails come with multiple steps, which turns them into a proper trek rather than a stroll, so they suit older kids and adults more than a buggy or a toddler on wobbly legs.
There's no visitor centre here (it's shut and might stay that way) and no staff on site, so this isn't somewhere with a shop to duck into if the weather turns or someone forgets their coat. Bring your own food and drink too, since there's nothing on site and the nearest place to eat is four miles away in Cheddleton. Pack a picnic and you've got the pools and woodland as your dining room.
Entry's free, which makes it an easy one to add to the list without worrying about the cost of a day out. Dogs are welcome but need to be on a lead throughout, since the reserve has sensitive wildlife, habitats and livestock to protect.

Plan your visit
How much does it cost?
Nothing, entry is free.
Do we need to book?
There's no booking link, you just turn up and pick a trail.
Is it OK for a pushchair?
The red route and the canal tow path are your best bet. The other trails have multiple steps and get tricky with a buggy.
Is there anywhere to get food?
Not on site. Bring a picnic or head to Cheddleton, about four miles away, for something to eat.
Are dogs allowed?
Yes, but they need to be on a lead and under close control the whole time because of the wildlife and livestock about.
Is there a visitor centre or staff on site?
The visitor centre is currently closed and might not reopen, and there's no staff based on site, so you're on your own for facilities beyond the toilets.
