Woodland & Forest in Stoke-on-Trent

If you fancy proper trees rather than a park with a few saplings, the options here mean a longer trip out from Stoke-on-Trent. Cannock Chase Forest, out at Rugeley, is an AONB with forest trails through it. The forest itself is free to walk, though parking costs from £4, and there is a cafe, picnic area and toilets if you are making a day of it. Dogs are welcome too, which is handy if the walk is really for them. Further out, a longer trip to Ashbourne gets you Heritage Wood, an illuminated woodland trail of about a mile, open to all ages from £8 with booking required and free parking. It suits an evening out more than a toddler's afternoon ramble, with hot drinks and craft stalls to warm up at afterwards. For daytime rambling and picnics, Cannock Chase is the one to choose; for something after dark, save Heritage Wood for a colder evening.
