What it’s like
Free wildlife watching over a Belfast Lough reserve, with hides looking out on Lapwings, terns and Konik Ponies.
This is a proper bird reserve on the edge of Belfast Lough, and it costs nothing to get in. You watch from hides and viewing points rather than walking round enclosures, and the site lists hundreds of bird species to spot, including Lapwings, terns and the Konik Ponies that graze the reserve. It suits a slower pace than a zoo does, so it's better for a child who's happy to sit quietly at a window for ten minutes than one who needs constant action.
There are four areas to the reserve: Belfast's Window on Wildlife itself, Harbour Meadows, Holywood Banks and Whitehouse Lagoon, though Harbour Meadows isn't currently open to visitors. Guided walks run throughout the year if you'd rather have someone point things out than go it alone with the binoculars. It's open daily, 10am to 4pm, and there's no booking system.
Food is basic, on-site refreshments rather than a café. The visitor centre has no steps, just a slight incline, and the roadside hide is fully accessible too, though the trackside hide isn't suitable for wheelchairs. Parking is limited to 13 spaces with 2 Blue Badge bays, and there's no lighting, so an early evening visit in winter isn't the one to pick.
If it's a birthday coming up, they do two-hour wildlife themed parties out on the reserve, which is a nice change from the usual soft play do.
