What it’s like

One-to-one lessons in guitar, piano, drums or singing for kids seven and up, plus free open mic nights and jam sessions.

Half-hour, one-to-one lessons on guitar, piano, drums or singing, with a tutor who's got a music degree or grade 8 behind them and further training from the academy's director. Your seven-year-old (that's the minimum age here, it's not really set up for younger ones) can turn up without an instrument and use one of theirs, or bring their own if they'd rather. Group classes run alongside the one-to-one slots if you'd rather they learned alongside other kids.

The free extras are where it gets interesting: open mic nights, workshops (Rock Band gets a mention), and jam sessions, all free and all a decent way to see whether the lessons are actually landing before you commit to more of them. £20 for 30 minutes isn't pocket change if you're doing it weekly, and once a trial lesson's done and you decide to carry on, it switches to paying monthly in advance rather than lesson by lesson.

They're open long hours through the week, 10am to 10pm Monday to Friday and 9 til 5 on Saturday, so an after-school slot or an evening one both work. Cancel with 24 hours notice and you get a lesson credit rather than losing the money outright, which takes the sting out of a missed Tuesday. Parking's free on-street, either on Belmont Road in the evenings or on the residential streets behind the studio in the afternoons.
