WHERE

Liverpool

What it’s like

A waterfront cluster of warehouses by the Mersey with cafés, restaurants and step-free paths for a wander, not one single attraction.

This is the old dock itself, the warehouses and cobbled quaysides that Liverpool built its trade on, now turned over to cafés, restaurants and shops around the water. There's no single ride or show to point your kids at here. It's a place you walk through, along the dock edge, in and out of whichever building takes your fancy, with the water on one side the whole way.

That makes it a bit of a blank canvas rather than a day out with a start and finish. Good if you've got a buggy, since it's step-free throughout with ramps and accessible parking on site, and there's a secure 24-hour car park if you're driving in. Less good if your kids need a concrete thing to aim for, because the fact pack here doesn't pin down which specific attractions are open on any given visit or what they cost, so you'd want to check what's actually on before you set off expecting something particular.

Food's covered without much fuss. There are proper restaurants as well as cafés, with vegetarian options going by what they list, so fussy eaters and grown ups after a sit-down meal are both catered for.

Getting there without a car is easy: James Street station is a five-minute walk, and if you're coming from Lime Street there's a two-minute train hop on the Loop Line rather than the twenty-minute walk. The Liverpool ONE coach station is two minutes away too.
