What it’s like
A woodland light trail at the Falkirk Wheel with a funfair, Santa's grotto and marshmallows over the fire, plus Segway and axe-throwing sessions for older kids.
The main event here is the illuminated woodland trail, a 1.4km loop of lit-up displays that the site reckons takes about 35 minutes to walk properly. Your ticket gives you a 1.5 hour slot and you can go round more than once if the little ones want a second look at their favourite bit, which is handy since 35 minutes of walking doesn't fill 90 minutes on its own. That's where the funfair and food stalls come in, and if you've booked Santa's grotto too, factor in extra time for that since it's a separate ticket slot at the Falkirk Wheel indoors.
Outside the Christmas run, Rough Castle also does Segway rides through the woodland and axe throwing, though the axe throwing is eight and up only, so it's not one for the younger ones in the group. Treasure hunt courses range from 1.8km to 3.6km, which is a proper stretch for a family walk rather than a quick loop.
It's £25 for a child and £35 for an adult at the Christmas event, and the same pricing applies over Hogmanay, when there are pyrotechnics and dogs aren't allowed on site. Parking on site is £3.50 and first come first served, so if that's full there's free overflow parking at the Falkirk Wheel off Millennium Drive, about ten minutes' walk. Buggies and wheelchairs can get round but the site is upfront that some sections get tricky in wet weather, and off-road wheels are the sensible option if you've got them.
Food is sorted on site, with several outlets and street food vendors before and after the trail. It's an evening event by the sound of it, timed entry slots and a QR code ticket sent by email rather than anything to collect at a box office.

Plan your visit
How much does it cost?
£25 for a child aged 6 to 15, £35 for an adult. Hogmanay tickets are priced the same.
Do we need to book?
Yes, tickets are bought online in advance and sent by email with a QR code, there's no box office to collect from.
How long does the trail take?
About 35 minutes to walk the woodland trail properly, but your ticket gives you a 1.5 hour slot and you can go round again if you like.
Can we book Santa's grotto on its own?
It only comes as an add-on to the illumination trail ticket, and it runs at a different time slot indoors at the Falkirk Wheel.
Is there parking?
£3.50 on site, first come first served. If that's full there's free overflow parking at the Falkirk Wheel off Millennium Drive.
Is it OK for buggies and wheelchairs?
It's accessible but some parts get tricky in wet weather. Off-road buggies or special wheels are advised and staff can help at the harder points.
Can we bring the dog?
Assistance dogs only. Dogs aren't allowed at all at the Hogmanay event because of the pyrotechnics.
What's the minimum age for axe throwing?
Eight years old, so it's not something the younger kids in your group can join in with.
Is there food on site?
Several food outlets and street food vendors before and after the trail, catering for most dietary requirements.
Where exactly is it?
The funfair and trail are at the Upper Deck of the Falkirk Wheel, about a ten minute walk from Falkirk Wheel station.
What age is this best for?
The illumination trail and funfair suit most ages, but axe throwing is 8 plus and worth planning around if your group has younger children too.
