What it’s like

Free entry to a medieval house and walled garden, with weekend crafts and a nature trail to keep kids busy outdoors.

Getting in costs nothing, which is the first thing worth knowing. You wander the historic interiors, then out to the walled garden with its herb beds and pond, and there's a nature trail with explorer packs if the kids need a job to do rather than just looking at old rooms. Auchinlea Park is next door too, with its own large pond, so the visit can stretch well beyond the house itself.

Weekends bring free craft activities, which is the bit that'll actually hold a younger child's attention longer than the architecture will. It's open Thursday to Sunday, 10 till 4, so a Monday visit is out and you'll want to check which day you're going.

The building is genuinely old, and that means low ceilings, uneven steps and no lift access in places, so it's not the easiest with a buggy indoors even though the grounds are open. There's a gift shop and food on site, plus a free car park right outside the gates if you're driving, or the X19 bus gets you there from central Glasgow in about 22 minutes.

Beyond the free stuff, they run paid events too, things like a paranormal investigation evening at £22 a head or a foraging and printing workshop at £20, alongside talks and discussions from £15. Those feel like the ones for a grown-up night out rather than a family afternoon, but they're worth knowing about if you fancy going back without the kids.
