What it’s like
A castle stay near Glasgow where kids under 8 sleep free and you can explore the public rooms, bar and library.
This one's less a day out and more a night or two away, with a castle attached. Nine bedrooms sit inside the castle itself, and if you're not staying in one of those you're still welcome to poke around the public rooms, bar and library, assuming there isn't a wedding on. That last bit's worth knowing, because they run exclusive-use weddings regularly and the castle simply shuts to everyone else when they do.
For families, the appeal is really about the stay rather than any activity list. Children under 8 stay free, which takes the sting out of a castle hotel booking, though 8 to 13 year olds are charged £50 a night, so a family with a mix of ages needs to do the maths. Breakfast is included wherever you stay, with a buffet, à la carte and a Bloody Mary station for the grown-ups who need one after a night in a castle.
Dogs are allowed in every room, and they'll even set up a bed and bowls if you ask, though the restaurants are off limits to them unless you're eating out on the terrace, and that's a £20 charge per dog. Parking's free and there's plenty of it, and wifi runs across the whole estate if anyone needs to check emails from a turret.
The spa is billed as opening in early autumn, so for now it's not part of the visit, but there's a nearby sister venue with a public gym and pool if that matters to you. Accessible rooms and facilities are available across the castle, hotel and lodges, which is a decent detail for anyone worrying about steps and stone floors.
