Bannockburn House
WHERE
Stirling
What it’s like
Guided tours of a historic house mid-conservation, plus garden tours and the odd living history event on weekends.
This is a proper old house still being worked on, and that's part of the appeal rather than a downside dressed up. You go round on a guided tour, not a wander-where-you-like job, and there are garden tours too if the weather's playing along. From April to November, on most weekends, they run tours between half ten and four, and living history events pop up alongside the family activities from what they list.
Book ahead if you can, though they say walk-ins get slotted into the next available tour, which takes the pressure off if your morning's gone sideways. Worth knowing the building is cold even in summer, so a jumper under the coat isn't overkill, and the path out to the grounds is uneven woodchip, so trainers with a bit of grip beat anything flimsy.
Getting there is the bit that needs planning. There's no direct bus from Stirling Station, and the A91 outside has no pavements or cycle lanes, so a car or taxi is really the only sensible way in. Parking's normally included with your ticket, and there are Blue Badge spaces near the entrance, though they ask you to get in touch beforehand if you have specific access needs given the conservation work still going on.
If you've got a dog, leave it at home for this one. The grounds aren't fenced off from that busy road, so it's not recommended even though assistance dogs are fine in the visitor areas.

Plan your visit
Do we need to book?
Advance booking is advised for the guided tours, but if you turn up without one they'll fit you into the next available slot.
What are the opening times?
Most weekends from April to November, 10:30am to 4pm.
Is there parking on site?
Yes, parking is normally included with admission, and there are Blue Badge spaces near the house entrance.
How do we get there without a car?
There's no direct bus from Stirling Station, so a taxi is your best bet. The A91 outside has no pavements, so it's not one for walking or cycling in.
Can we bring the dog?
Better not to. The grounds aren't fenced off from the road, so it's not recommended even for well behaved dogs, though assistance dogs are welcome inside.
