What it’s like
Roller skating under disco lights, with lessons for kids and a session length that keeps small legs happy.
Skates go on, the lights dim, and your kids are off round the rink to whatever's on the speakers that session. RollerStop runs proper roller disco sessions rather than free-for-all skating, with lessons available if your child's never strapped on a pair of skates before. Four is the minimum age, so this isn't one for younger toddlers, but from that age up it's a good change from the usual soft play circuit.
A visit works out at around two hours all in, they reckon, once you count fifteen minutes to get skates on, ninety minutes of actual skating, and another fifteen to hand the gear back. Cheap Skate sessions are £10 with free skate hire, other sessions start from £8 with hire priced separately, so it's worth knowing which session you're booking into before you turn up expecting the same deal twice. Spectators don't pay, which is handy if you've got one child skating and a younger one just watching from the side.
A couple of rules are worth knowing before you go. Socks are compulsory if you're hiring skates and you'll be buying a pair on the spot if you forget your own. No outside food or drink is allowed in, but there's a café on site doing pizza, hot dogs and nachos, with dairy-free and gluten-free options, though it doesn't serve hot food during adult sessions. Glow sticks, sparklers and candle blowing are all off the list too, which rules out a proper birthday cake moment, and RollerStop don't run children's parties as such, though you can book a regular session as a group and skate together.
Booking is required and tickets tend to go up four to six weeks ahead, so this isn't a turn-up-on-the-day sort of place. Opening hours shift about across the week, with some days split into an afternoon slot and a separate evening one, so check which window you're aiming for. On-street parking is free but gets tight in school holidays, and parking near Shields Road Subway is the fallback if the street's full.
