What it’s like
A guided walk through the lighthouse tunnel out along the pier, for kids aged 10 and up with an adult in tow.
This one's a tour, not a play session. You go through the tunnel that runs out under the pier to the lighthouse itself, led by a guide, with a ladder climb near the end that's the reason the minimum age sits at 10. No height restriction, but you do need to book online in advance, there's no walking up and hoping for a spot.
It only runs April to October, and even then the site is upfront that bad weather can shut the pier at short notice, they don't control that bit and neither do you. If a tour gets cancelled you get an email and your money back straight away, which is fair enough, but it does mean building in a bit of flexibility if you're planning a day around it.
There's a child concession rate, though adults pay full price, no discount there. It suits older kids who fancy something a bit different from the usual seaside trip, a proper bit of local engineering history rather than a playground. Dogs can't come along either, the ladder from tunnel to lighthouse rules that out completely.
Parking nearby is limited and paid, on Marine Walk, so if you're coming by car it's worth getting there in good time rather than circling for a space.

Plan your visit
How old do kids need to be?
Ten and up, and they need an adult with them. There's no height restriction, just the age rule.
Can we just turn up on the day?
No, everything has to be booked online in advance rather than paying on arrival.
What happens if the weather's bad?
Tours get cancelled at short notice if the pier has to close, and they say that's completely out of their hands. You get an email and a refund straight away if it happens.
Is it open all year?
It normally runs April to October. Winter weather conditions are too extreme to keep it going through the colder months.
Can we bring the dog?
Dogs aren't allowed on any part of the tour. There's a ladder from the tunnel up to the lighthouse that they simply can't climb.
