What it’s like
A miniature steam train chugs you round the boating lake for £2 a head, with under-3s riding free.
A small steam engine pulls you round the boating lake, which is about as simple and as good as a train ride gets. There's no big build-up here, no queueing for an hour for ninety seconds of track. You just turn up, pay your £2 and get a proper little loop with the water on one side.
It's weekend only for most of the year, so don't plan a Tuesday trip around it unless you're going in the October half term window, when it runs daily from the 24th to the 1st. Hours shift with the season too, an earlier finish in winter (dusk, basically) and a longer summer day up to 6pm. Being an outdoor steam railway, it's weather dependent, and the site is upfront that services can be cancelled or cut short if the weather turns, so a howling wet Saturday probably isn't the day.
Under-3s travel free, which is a nice touch if you've got a little one who just wants to sit on a lap and watch the wheels go. There's a café on site for afterwards, which is handy since a ride round a lake takes minutes rather than hours and you'll likely want somewhere to sit once you're done.
At £2 a person it's not a big spend, and that's probably the point. It's the sort of stop that fits neatly either side of a longer walk round the lake itself, rather than being a destination on its own.
