What it’s like
Free country park with play areas, cycle trails and an orienteering route to work through before a coffee at the pavilion café.
There's a fair bit to get through here before anyone asks to go home. The children's play areas are the obvious first stop, but the cycle trails and orienteering route give older ones something with a bit more purpose, if you fancy turning the visit into a proper mission rather than just a play-and-leave.
Getting in costs nothing, which makes it an easy one to slot into a free afternoon rather than a big planned day out. The car park holds over a hundred cars and it's free too, so that's one less thing to think about before you've even got the picnic blanket out.
Opening hours are 10am to 3pm on weekdays (a bit earlier finish, 2.30pm, in winter), and that's worth building your visit around since the park closes to vehicles at dusk. Pedestrians can get in around the clock, but you'll want your car out before the gates shut if you're driving.
When hunger strikes, the Coffee Stop Café in the pavilion does hot and cold drinks and food, so you're not relying on a packed lunch alone, though the picnic area is right there if you'd rather bring your own. Toilets are on site too, which matters more than it sounds once you've been out on the trails for an hour.
