What it’s like

Free woodland park with a play area, an exercise trail and three themed walking routes to work through.

There's a play area with a handful of features to keep smaller kids busy, and then the park opens out into something bigger: an exercise trail for the older ones (and you, if you fancy it), plus an extensive path network split into three themed marked trails. If you've got a mix of ages, that's the sell here, the little ones can stick near the play area while anyone older heads off on a proper walk.

The self-guided trail is the nice touch. You pull up historical information on your phone as you go, which turns a walk into something with a bit more purpose than just yomping about. It's free to get in and parking on site is free too during opening hours, so a visit costs you nothing beyond whatever you bring for lunch.

Speaking of which, picnics are allowed on the grassland next to the play area, with tables already there, so pack a bag rather than hoping for a café. There's step free access and toilets on site, which makes it a straightforward one for buggies. Being outdoors and free, it's an easy one to build a morning or afternoon around without worrying about booking anything in advance.
