What it’s like
A working marina you can wander round for free, with waterside cafés and restaurants and boats to watch coming and going.
This isn't a ride or an attraction with a ticket booth, it's a proper working marina, so what you're doing is walking the pontoons, watching the boats and picking somewhere to eat by the water. There's no set route or session time, you just turn up and see what's moored up that day, which suits a slow morning better than a packed itinerary.
Food is the other reason to come. The Galley café sits right on site, and The Custom House has both El Puerto and La Marina if you want a sit-down meal, with The Oystercatcher and The Pilot Gastro Pub nearby too if you fancy a wander further round. It's a decent spread for a marina, so you could easily turn a look round the boats into a full lunch stop.
If you're coming by train, Cogan station is about 15 minutes on foot and has frequent services to Cardiff, or Penarth station is close as well. Driving in, there are three car parks, though only berth holders get free parking; everyone else is on pay and display, which is the one cost most visitors will actually hit.
None of this is really set up as a children's attraction as such. Free wifi and toilets on site make it an easy enough pause with a buggy.
