What it’s like

Pick a mug, plate or bowl and paint it yourself, from £5 an item, no studio fee to sit and do it.

You choose a piece of blank pottery, a mug, a plate, a bowl, or a hanging heart decoration, and paint it however you like while you're there. There's no fee just to sit at the table, you pay per item, and most pieces land between £14 and £25 though you can go as low as £5 if you want something small. A basic session runs an hour and a half, which is enough time to get properly into it without a toddler melting down halfway through.

Booking's required rather than optional, so this isn't a turn-up-and-see kind of visit. They run two sites, the Boneyard and Goodsheds, and it's worth knowing they're not equal on access: Goodsheds has a lift and proper ramps across the site plus a wheelchair-accessible toilet with baby changing, while the Boneyard's toilets are more basic and don't have either. Both are step-free though, so buggies aren't an issue at either.

Opening hours shift through the week, starting later on Thursdays and Fridays (midday) but earlier at the weekend, and they'll sometimes open on Mondays and Tuesdays in school holidays if you need an extra option. If you're painting for a party, adult birthday parties run £27 and hen parties for up to ten come in at £330, both needing a £30 deposit, and both take longer than the standard session at around two and a half hours for hens.

One thing to know if you're not fussed about collecting your piece straight away: storage is limited, and anything left uncollected for a month may get disposed of. Worth picking a date to swing back and grab it rather than letting it sit.
