What it’s like

Glasshouses, a dinosaur trail and a mini train to ride round gardens, ponds and museum bits, with under-3s in free.

You wander through planthouses and gardens, then into the Planet Earth Museum and a Dinosaur Safari that's clearly the bit small kids remember, before doubling back for a go on the miniature train and the mini golf. In spring and summer there's a pot of fish food for a pound if the ponds are stocked, and both the indoor and outdoor play areas mean a rained-off morning still has somewhere to go.

A family of four day pass comes in at £51.96 on the door, which stacks up once you count the train, the golf and the odd token, but under-3s go in free and there's a membership from £41.99 a year if you'll be back more than a couple of times. The museum, gardens and play areas shut half an hour before the main gate does, so don't leave the train ride to the last twenty minutes.

Buggies and wheelchairs move around easily on flat, mostly tarmac paths, and there are a few wheelchairs free to borrow if you're quick. It's dog friendly for assistance dogs on a lead or harness, but general pets aren't allowed in. If you're after a disabled person ticket, they'll want to see DLA or PIP evidence dated within the last two years.

The restaurant does breakfast through to tea and cakes, and there's a coffee pod up by the playzone for a quicker hot drink and an ice cream. Birthday parties start at £15.99 a head with the birthday child free, a private room, buffet and goody bag thrown in, and the site runs a Halloween trail and a Santa's grotto if you're timing a visit around those.
