What it’s like

Free woodland trails and a wildflower meadow to wander, with hills, mud and no toilets to plan around.

Meandering tracks thread through mixed woodland here, the sort of paths that don't really go anywhere in particular, which is rather the point. There's a woodland meadow too, thick with flora and, if the timing's right, butterflies and moths for anyone who fancies a slow wander looking for them rather than charging about.

It's free to get in and there's no booking involved, you just turn up. The car park only holds around 12 cars though, so if you're picturing a coach party or a big group, that's not going to work here, and there isn't a spot set aside for accessible parking either. Dogs are welcome off doing their own exploring, and you can bring a picnic and just sit in the meadow if the weather's playing along.

Worth knowing before you set off: there are no visitor facilities on site, so no toilets, which matters more with small children than with anyone else. The ground is hilly too and gets properly muddy once winter sets in, so wellies over trainers if you're coming any time from autumn onwards. And the car park itself is closed for timber harvesting until late September, so check that's not the case when you're planning to go.

There's no entry fee and nothing to book, which makes it an easy one to just decide on the morning and drive over for, so long as the car park's open and you've sorted out the toilet situation before you leave the house.

Plan your visit

Is it free to visit?

Yes, there's no entry charge and nothing to book, you just turn up.

Is there parking?

A small free car park with room for about 12 cars and no height barrier, though it's closed for timber harvesting until late September. There's no designated accessible parking.

Are there toilets or anywhere to get food?

Visitor facilities on site, so bring what you need with you. A picnic in the meadow works well if the weather's on your side.

Is it buggy friendly?

The terrain is hilly and can get muddy in winter, so it's better suited to sturdy boots than a buggy on the wet days.
