What it’s like
Free woodland trails with old lead mining remains to explore, open every day of the year.
This is forest tracks and trails cutting through old workings from the lead mining days, so you get a proper walk with something to spot along the way rather than just trees. The industrial history is the bit that sticks: the site points out the mining remains, which gives older kids a reason to keep walking that "are we there yet" can't quite override.
Entry itself is free and it's open all 365 days of the year. The car park is where the costs live: £2 for up to two hours, £3 for up to four, £5 for the whole day, and it's card only, so don't turn up with a pocket of coins expecting to pay. Worth knowing too that there's a height barrier of 1.98m, which will catch out anyone in a taller van or roof-box-laden estate.
There's a picnic area if you want to bring your own lunch and make a proper stop of it rather than just passing through, and toilets and parking are both on site. Assistance dogs are welcome. If you're a Forestry England national member the parking is free, which is worth factoring in if this is somewhere you'd come back to often, at £96 a year it only pays for itself with regular visits.
