Woodland & Forest in Bristol

Bristol has proper mud-and-bluebells woodland, and it costs nothing to enjoy it. Prior's Wood sits out toward the edge of the city, free to walk with bluebells in spring and buzzards overhead if you look up. Overscourt Woods, also on the outskirts, has trails through a wildflower meadow and welcomes dogs, though there's no toilet so plan ahead. Further out, a drive out to Wells brings you to Stockhill Wood, where old lead mining remains poke through the trees and it's open every day of the year. All three are free, which helps when you're deciding on a whim. Prior's Wood and Overscourt suit anyone happy with proper hills and mud underfoot, so wellies over buggies. Stockhill Wood is the better bet if you want parking, a picnic area and toilets on site, useful with younger children in tow. None have cafes, so pack your own food whichever wood you pick.
