What it’s like

A small local museum where kids try on Victorian boots and spin old vinyl on a real record player.

This isn't a big-budget museum with interactive screens everywhere. It's a local history collection where the exhibition rooms let kids handle real things, try on a pair of Victorian boots, and hear what a record actually sounded like on a proper record player. That kind of hands-on detail sticks with children better than a glass case ever does.

Entry is £5 for adults and free for anyone under 16, which is decent value for an afternoon if you've got more than one child in tow. There's a further charge if you fancy the Grottoes & Gardens bit too, £5 for adults and £3 for children, so it's worth deciding at the door whether you want the full visit or just the museum. Opening hours are tight though: Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons only, 2pm to 5pm, so this isn't a spontaneous rainy Wednesday plan.

There's a café on site for drinks and cakes if you need a sit down halfway round, and free parking with dedicated disabled spaces means you're not hunting for change or a space streets away. It's wheelchair accessible throughout, with staff on hand to help, and well behaved dogs on leads are welcome in the William Champion Gardens if you're walking one along with the kids.

The museum reopens for the 2026 season on Saturday 4th April at the earlier time of 11am to 5pm, so that first weekend is worth diarising if you've been waiting for it to open back up.
