What it’s like

A free one-acre community garden to wander, with gravel paths, a bandstand and space for a picnic.

A one-acre garden run as a community project, so what you find is more allotment-meets-park than manicured show garden. There's community gardening going on, which means the beds change with whoever's been in tending them, and a bandstand to head for if you want a focal point to walk to.

It costs nothing to get in, which makes it an easy add to a day that's already got a paid attraction on it, or just somewhere to fill an hour without spending anything. The paths are hard pressed gravel rather than tarmac, fine for most buggies and wheelchairs, and there's a shallow ramp up to the bandstand. Picnics are allowed, so if the weather's playing along it's worth packing something rather than hunting for a café nearby.

Parking is free in the garden centre car park next door, which takes the sting out of the visit before you've even walked in. Hours shift a little through the week: 9am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, a shorter 10:30am to 3:30pm on Sundays. It's shut on the big Christmas dates, New Year's Day and Easter Sunday, so check you're not turning up on one of those.
