What it’s like
A free wander round an orchard, a new wood and beehives, with elephant hawk moths if you're lucky.
This is a proper pootle-about spot rather than a big-attraction day out. There's a fruit orchard to stroll through, a newer patch of wood where you can poke about for wildlife, and beehives near the orchard that are worth timing for spring when the apple blossom's out. The site mentions elephant hawk moths turning up, which are the vivid pink and green ones, so it's the sort of place where a keen five-year-old with a bug book could easily spend longer than you planned.
It's free to get in, which makes it an easy one to add to a weekend without much planning. There's a small car park on site, though given the size of it you'd guess it doesn't take many cars, so an early arrival on a nice day probably pays off. Nothing's said about food.
Dogs are welcome as long as they're under close control and cleaned up after, which is handy if a dog walk and a kids' wildlife wander are both on the agenda. Worth knowing the site is clear that camping, barbeques, horseriding and motorbikes aren't allowed, so this is a look-and-wander reserve rather than anywhere you'd set up for the day. If your children are used to bigger playgrounds this might feel quiet, but for spotting moths and watching bees work the blossom it does exactly what it says.
