What it’s like

Flat grass paths lead to bird hides looking over the wetlands, free to wander and open to buggies.

The main thing to do here is walk out to the hides and see what's on the water. It is a proper bird reserve rather than an attraction with things laid on, so the entertainment is whatever's flying about that day, herons, waders, whatever the season brings. Older kids who like spotting things will get more out of it than a toddler who wants something to climb on, but the paths are flat grass and fine for a buggy, so a walk with a baby asleep in it works just as well.

There's no charge to get in and there's an on-site car park, which takes away one of the usual headaches with reserves like this. Toilets are on site too. What there isn't is anywhere to eat, so if lunch is part of the plan you will want to bring it with you or head into the village afterwards, where there's a pub.

Winter is the catch. The paths are grass rather than tarmac, and after rain they get properly muddy, so wellies over trainers if you're going any time between autumn and spring. Dogs are welcome but need to be on a lead, which is worth knowing if you were planning to let one off for a run while the kids are in the hide.
