What it’s like
A narrow gauge diesel train ride along the seafront to a crazy golf course, with dogs and buggies both welcome aboard.
The ride itself is short and sweet: ten minutes out, a ten minute stop, then ten minutes back, so you're looking at half an hour if you do the full return. That's about right for a two-year-old who won't sit still much longer, though older kids might want to split the journey and hop off partway, which you're allowed to do on the same ticket as long as you've clocked the departure times.
There's a proper little station feel to the whole thing, and if you fancy stretching the day out, the Putt n Ride ticket bundles the train with a 9-hole crazy golf course, which feels like the smarter buy if you've got over-fives who'll want more than a train ride to talk about later. Tickets are bought on the day only, no booking ahead unless it's a Santa Special.
Dogs are welcome on board for £1.50 a head, lead on at all times, which is a nice touch if the walk along from the pier has already worn the dog out. Food comes from the Sidings Snack Shack at Lakeside Station for the usual hot food and ice creams, plus the Signal Box Inn if the grown-ups fancy a drink while the kids eat chips. Parking's pay and display at both stations, and blue badge holders go free.
It's a fair walk from Cleethorpes Pier, about 20 minutes, though the Lollipop Road Train covers that route from Easter to September if little legs have had enough. There's a disabled access carriage running most days too, which is worth knowing if a wheelchair user in your group wants to join the ride rather than watch from the platform.
