What it’s like

Hop aboard a genuine steam-era carriage for a heritage ride along the old Malton and Driffield line, with a working restoration shed to peer into afterwards.

The ride itself is short but the point is what surrounds it: a genuine MK1 coach to sit in, a stretch of the old Malton and Driffield line to rattle along, and a working facility where you can watch actual restoration work happening on the locomotives rather than looking at a finished museum piece behind glass. It's a proper working railway rather than a polished attraction, which is either exactly what you want or a mild letdown depending on what you were picturing.

Rides run on Sundays through April to October, plus a handful of extra Wednesdays and Saturdays over summer and on bank holidays, all 10am to 4pm with last entry at 3:30pm. It's pay on the day rather than booking ahead, though that does mean your trip depends on which locomotive is running that day. A family ticket for two adults and three children is £17, or £7.50 for an adult and £3.75 for a child if you're going solo or in an odd-numbered group.

There's no age range specified, so use your judgement: younger children will likely be happy with the ride and the chance to spot a real train being worked on, while older ones might get more out of the history of the line itself. Parking's free on site and dogs are welcome to come along too, which is handy if the walk to the platform is part of your day out rather than an afterthought.
