York
What it’s like
A touring and glamping site three miles outside York, with a playground and games room for the evenings between sightseeing.
You pitch up, get the awning sorted, and the kids head straight for the playground while you work out the games room for later. There's outdoor play space and a picnic area if you'd rather eat outside than pack everyone into the caravan, and the site is dog friendly if you're bringing one along, on a lead, two per pitch.
The location does the heavy lifting here. You're about three miles from York itself, with a bus stop a fifteen minute walk away in Woodthorpe, or the Askham Bar Park and Ride a few minutes' drive if you'd rather not deal with city parking in the caravan. That means your days can be proper York days, museums and walls and all that, and your evenings are back at a quiet pitch with the kids running about before bed.
Pitch prices shift with the season, from £29 for a standard pitch in low season up to £36 on a high season Friday or Saturday, and the serviced super pitches run a few pounds more. If caravanning isn't your thing there are glamping pods and an Oakley horsebox to book instead, with short breaks as well as full weeks. Check-in's from 1pm and you're out by noon, and a deposit secures the booking, £25 for a touring pitch or £50 for glamping, non-refundable but they'll shift it to another date if they can.
One thing to know before you book a Bank Holiday weekend: it's a three night minimum. And only one car comes free with your pitch, so if you've brought two you'll be parking the second in the main car park.
